After many hours of listening to all the Canadian bands scheduled to perform at the annual event SXSW 2012 in Austin, I’ve picked my favourites. It wasn’t an easy task. I was quite underwhelmed and disappointed by the poor production quality. Some of the bands might be excellent live but their poor quality recordings are doing them a disservice in this over crowded music industry. Of course, it’s open for debate – some people will say it’s fine, others won’t.

For now, here are my picks:

It’s that time of the year already! SXSW 2012 – March 9-18 in Austin. Here is the lined up for the Irish bands chosen to perform at the events. The rock fans won’t be disappointed this year.

The Minutes

Hands up. Who likes rock and roll? And by rock and roll we mean proper rock and roll, born in the 50′s, dragged kicking and screaming through the late 20th century, a ragged flag passed from generation to generation under the stewardship of true believers – Chuck Berry, John Lennon, Phil Lynott, Keith Richards, Bruce Springsteen.

This is it, another year is coming to an end. Where did it go? Loads has happened and plenty more is coming. I’m really looking forward to continue in the next year. In the meantime, I long for a much needed break… to refill my energy, my mind, my soul and rest my body.

Lana Del Rey – @lanadelrey

For the past few weeks, I’ve been hearing Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games” a lot on the radio and I can’t help but wonder. She sounds so deep and melancholic; beautiful sadness. I went on to listen to her other single “Blue Jeans” and she still has that heavy-hearted and languishing sound. In a previous post, I was talking about how branding is important for any artist and she is great example. She definitely sets herself apart. As stated on her Facebook page her genre is Hollywood pop / sad core. You could not be as precise as that. I love her music videos. She doesn’t have an album out yet but she surely is hitting the industry pretty fast.

Music is everywhere and easily available. How can you stand out?
Create compelling artwork. It’s that simple!

Today, I would like to share this video.
Listen with your eyes!

“I need nothing” is an original concept from Cãoceito + Burdman, shot by Moopie. It was inspired by the theme of Biennial’s EXD’11, an international biennale dedicated to design, architecture and creativity. The music was lent by Parenthetical Girls.

As part of the SoundCloud Global Meetup in Dublin, I’ve talked about takesquestions.com
We all know how important it is for an artist to engage with their fans. Facebook, Twitter and other platforms have enabled a more direct fan to artist approach but let’s push it further. How about answering questions from your fans in a recording?

Take Questions is the perfect tool to do so. Jointly with SoundCloud, people can record their questions for you to answer them back. It’s that simple.

“spamming (verb) : Send the same message indiscriminately to (large numbers of recipients) on the Internet. ”

You should not post your track on anyone’s profile (eg someone’s wall on Facebook) without their permission. It is a bad approach and does nothing to increase your fan-base – quite the opposite really. This is called SPAM. You have a better chance to get your music heard, if you take the time to send a private message with a link to your music and information.

Now that you are on SoundCloud, why not stream directly onto your website?

At the SoundCloud Meetup in Dublin, I talked about the SoundCloud’s Stratus player.

Stratus player is a jQuery SoundCloud music player that can be easily integrated into your website. It enables all visitors to listen to your music while they navigate through your pages. It streams directly from your SoundCloud account and it is very simple to customise. You can place the player at the top or the bottom of your website. It works on the iPhone and Ipad.
